Plant Overview

Wild Lupine is a stunning native perennial that creates a spectacular display with its tall spikes of blue-purple flowers. These showy blooms emerge in late spring to early summer, creating a dramatic vertical accent in any garden setting. Known for attracting pollinators, especially butterflies, Wild Lupine plays a crucial role in supporting local ecosystems and is the sole food source for the endangered Karner Blue butterfly larvae.

Plant Care

Wild Lupine thrives with minimal maintenance once established. Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a deep root system. After establishment, these plants are drought-tolerant and prefer drier conditions. Remove spent flower stalks to encourage reblooming and maintain plant vigor. Avoid fertilizing as these plants prefer poor soil and fix their own nitrogen.

Planting Instructions

Plant Wild Lupine in spring or early fall, spacing plants 12-18 inches apart. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and at the same depth. Place the plant at the same level it was growing in the container, backfill with soil, and water thoroughly. Add a light layer of mulch around the plant, keeping it away from the crown to prevent rot. These plants have a taproot, so choose their location carefully as they don’t transplant well once established.
