Plant Information

  • Latin Name: Monarda fistulosa
  • Common Name: Wild Bergamot, Bee Balm
  • Watering Requirements: Medium
  • Sun Exposure: Full Sun to Partial Shade
  • Soil Conditions: Well-draining, average to moist
  • Mature Plant Height: 2-4 feet
  • Mature Plant Width: 2-3 feet
  • Plant Care

Wild Bergamot is relatively low-maintenance once established. Regular deadheading promotes continuous blooming and prevents self-seeding. While generally disease-resistant, providing good air circulation helps prevent powdery mildew. Cut back stems to ground level in late fall or early spring. Division every 2-3 years maintains plant vigor and prevents center die-out.

    Planting Instructions

Plant Wild Bergamot in spring or early fall, spacing plants 18-24 inches apart. Dig holes twice as wide as the root ball and at the same depth. Amend soil with organic matter if needed. Water thoroughly after planting and maintain consistent moisture until established. Apply a layer of mulch around the plant, keeping it away from the stems to prevent rot.
