Plant Information
Plant Care
False Indigo is remarkably low-maintenance once established. This drought-tolerant plant requires minimal watering and thrives with little intervention. After flowering, attractive seed pods develop, providing winter interest. Prune back stems to ground level in late winter or early spring before new growth emerges.
The plant is deer and rabbit resistant, making it an excellent choice for natural gardens. Disease and pest problems are rare, contributing to its reputation as a carefree perennial. No deadheading is necessary, though it can be done to maintain a tidier appearance.
Planting Instructions
Plant in spring or fall, spacing plants 3-4 feet apart. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and at the same depth. Remove the plant from its container and gently loosen the roots. Place in the hole, ensuring the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface.
Backfill with soil, firming gently to eliminate air pockets. Water thoroughly after planting and apply a 2-inch layer of mulch around the base, keeping it away from the crown. While the plant establishes, maintain consistent moisture but avoid overwatering.
