Plant Care

Spanish Bayonet is remarkably low-maintenance and drought-tolerant once established. This resilient plant requires minimal watering and thrives in poor soil conditions. Remove dead or yellowing leaves to maintain appearance and cut spent flower stalks at the base. Winter protection is generally unnecessary as the plant is cold-hardy to -15°C.

Fertilization is rarely needed, but if desired, apply a slow-release fertilizer in early spring. Watch for scale insects and mealybugs, although pest problems are uncommon. Good air circulation helps prevent fungal issues during humid conditions.

Planting Instructions

Choose a location with full sun and well-draining soil. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and as deep as the container. Remove the plant from its container and gently loosen the roots. Place in the hole at the same depth as it was growing in the container.

Backfill with soil, firming gently to eliminate air pockets. Water thoroughly after planting, but allow soil to dry between waterings. Apply a 2-inch layer of mulch around the plant, keeping it away from the crown to prevent rot. Space plants 4-6 feet apart to allow for mature growth.
