Plant Information
Plant Care
The Skylands Oriental Spruce is remarkably low-maintenance once established. Regular watering during the first growing season helps develop a strong root system. While drought-tolerant after establishment, consistent moisture produces the best growth. Annual fertilization in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer promotes optimal health and vibrant needle color.
Pruning is typically unnecessary but can be done in late winter or early spring to maintain shape. This cultivar shows excellent resistance to pests and diseases, though occasional monitoring for spider mites is recommended during dry periods.
Planting Instructions
Select a location with adequate space for mature growth and well-draining soil. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and equal in depth. Remove the container and gently loosen the roots. Place the tree in the hole, ensuring it sits at the same depth as it was in the container.
Backfill with native soil, tamping down gently to remove air pockets. Create a water basin around the tree and apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch, keeping it away from the trunk. Water thoroughly and deeply after planting.
