Plant Overview

The Sensitive Fern (Onoclea sensibilis) is a unique and captivating native fern species that adds a touch of prehistoric charm to any garden setting. Known for its distinctive bright green fronds and interesting texture, this fern gets its name from its sensitivity to frost, with fronds that quickly blacken at the first sign of cold weather. The fertile fronds persist through winter, providing visual interest during the dormant season.

Plant Care

Sensitive Ferns thrive in consistently moist conditions and require minimal maintenance once established. Regular watering is essential during dry spells, and a layer of organic mulch helps retain moisture and suppress weeds. Remove any damaged or dead fronds in early spring before new growth emerges. These ferns spread through underground rhizomes and may need occasional division every 3-4 years to maintain desired size and vigor.

Planting Instructions

Plant your Sensitive Fern in spring or early fall for best results. Choose a location with filtered sunlight or shade and prepare the soil by incorporating organic matter. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and at the same depth. Place the plant in the hole, ensuring the crown is level with the soil surface. Backfill with soil, water thoroughly, and apply a 2-inch layer of mulch around the plant, keeping it away from the crown to prevent rot.
