Plant Overview
Prairie Sky Switch Grass is a stunning ornamental grass that adds vertical interest and movement to any landscape. Its steel-blue foliage emerges in spring, creating an upright, vase-shaped form that becomes more dramatic as the season progresses. By late summer, airy panicles of tiny flowers appear above the foliage, creating a delicate, cloud-like effect that turns golden in fall.
Plant Information
Plant Care
Prairie Sky Switch Grass is remarkably low-maintenance and drought-tolerant once established. This hardy grass requires minimal attention throughout the growing season. Cut back the dried foliage to 4-6 inches above ground in late winter or early spring before new growth emerges. Division is rarely necessary but can be done every 4-5 years if desired.
The grass maintains its upright habit even after heavy rain or snow, providing winter interest and shelter for wildlife. Regular watering during the first growing season helps establish a deep, extensive root system. After establishment, the plant is drought-tolerant and requires only occasional watering during extended dry periods.
Planting Instructions
Plant Prairie Sky Switch Grass in spring or early fall for best results. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and at the same depth. Remove the plant from its container and gently loosen the roots. Place the plant in the hole, ensuring it sits at the same depth as it was in the container.
Backfill with soil, firming gently to eliminate air pockets. Water thoroughly after planting and apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the base, keeping it away from the crown. Space plants 2-3 feet apart to allow for mature spread.
