Plant Information

  • Latin Name: Quercus muehlenbergii
  • Common Name: Chinkapin Oak, Yellow Chestnut Oak
  • Watering Requirements: Moderate, drought tolerant once established
  • Sun Exposure: Full sun to partial shade
  • Soil Conditions: Well-draining, adaptable to various pH levels, prefers alkaline
  • Mature Plant Height: 40-60 feet
  • Mature Plant Width: 50-70 feet
  • Plant Care

Chinkapin Oak requires minimal maintenance once established. Water deeply but infrequently during the first growing season to encourage deep root development. Mulch around the base, keeping material away from the trunk, to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune dead or damaged branches in late winter or early spring. This species demonstrates excellent resistance to common oak diseases and pests.

    Planting Instructions

Select a location with full sun and ample space for mature growth. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and equal in depth. Remove the tree from its container and gently loosen the roots. Position the tree so the root flare is slightly above soil level. Backfill with native soil, tamping down to remove air pockets. Water thoroughly and apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the base, maintaining a mulch-free zone near the trunk.
