Plant Care

Buttonbush is a low-maintenance shrub that thrives in wet conditions. Regular watering is essential during the establishment period, though mature plants are relatively drought-tolerant. Prune in late winter to maintain shape and remove dead or damaged branches. Fertilization is typically unnecessary, but a layer of organic mulch can benefit growth and moisture retention.

Planting Instructions

Plant buttonbush in spring or fall, digging a hole twice the width of the root ball and equal in depth. Position the plant at the same level it was growing in the container, backfill with native soil, and water thoroughly. Space plants 4-6 feet apart to allow for mature growth. Add a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the base, keeping it away from the trunk to prevent rot.
