Plant Care
Blue Oat Grass is remarkably low-maintenance and drought-tolerant once established. In spring, remove any dead foliage by combing through the plant with your fingers or cutting back to about 6 inches above ground level. This grass rarely requires division and performs best when left undisturbed. While it tolerates drought well, regular watering during the first growing season helps establish a deep, extensive root system.
During the growing season, this grass requires minimal care beyond occasional watering during extended dry periods. It’s resistant to most pests and diseases, making it an excellent choice for busy gardeners. The plant maintains its blue coloring throughout winter, providing year-round interest to the landscape.
Planting Instructions
Plant Blue Oat Grass in spring or early fall for best results. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and at the same depth. Place the plant at the same level it was growing in the container, backfill with soil, and water thoroughly. Space plants 2-3 feet apart to allow for mature growth. Apply a light layer of mulch around the base, keeping it away from the crown to prevent rot.
For container planting, choose a pot with adequate drainage holes and use well-draining potting soil. The container should be at least 12 inches deep to accommodate the root system. Position the container in a full sun location for optimal growth and color development.
